Open Video in Wikipedia

Contributors and editors will now able to add video content to Wikipedia articles and media repository. A related website called "Let's Get Video on Wikipedia" has been launched by a group of organization which are working on open video formats, including Mozilla, the Open Video Alliance, Miro and Kaltura, the video partner for Wikimedia.

Wikipedia preferred to use an open source video stack implemented with HTML5 and Theora to publish videos on their online encyclopedia.

Wikipedia's campaign is not in favor of proprietary video formats like Adobe Flash and H.264, previously used by Youtube in their HTML5 video tests. Mozilla has previously declared they will not license H.264 for Firefox based on a philosophical and a financial ground and Firefox web browser currently supports Theora video together with Google Chrome, Konqueror and Opera.

Miro also provides an open source video converter available for Windows and Mac to allow people to convert to Theora.
