Launching the Open Font Library and Freeing Fonts

The mission of the Open Font Library (http://openfontlibrary.org) is to promote your freedom as it relates to fonts. All of the typefaces contained in the library are available under a free license, which gives you the freedom to use, study, remix and share each and every font. The site is powered by the Aiki Framework (http://aikiframework.org), a powerful web framework for building network services using the AGPL license.

Over the past decade we have witnessed a burst of new technological achievements.

 

Wikipedia Changes Look

The English version of Wikipedia, the biggest web encyclopedia with free content, changed look and feel today.

The new skin, called Vector, provides simplified navigation and enhanced functionalities. The tabs at the top of each page are now better defined and the search box is more prominent and positioned on the top right. Formatting pages is now easier, a cheat-sheet is even presented to help new editors. The new layout also provides an easy-to-use tool for the creation and editing of links.

Open Video in Wikipedia

Contributors and editors will now able to add video content to Wikipedia articles and media repository. A related website called "Let's Get Video on Wikipedia" has been launched by a group of organization which are working on open video formats, including Mozilla, the Open Video Alliance, Miro and Kaltura, the video partner for Wikimedia.

 

New Design and Features for Open Clip Art Library

The Open Clip Art Library team announced the publishing of a new release of Open Clip Art Library (http://openclipart.org). The site which reached version 2.0 contains more than 26,000 original and remixed high quality scalable vector graphic (SVG) files that have been produced by over 1,200 creative artists.

GSK: Open Source from Software to Pharmaceuticals

UK giant pharmaceutical manufacturer GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) has announced it will rely on Open Source strategies to improve drug research and to help the development of vaccines for Malaria and other diseases in the third world countries.

GSK revealed details of 13500 chemical compounds from its scientific database and will establish a research 'open lab'.

University Provides Open Source Computing Degree

The Aberystwyth University located in Aberystwyth, Wales provides a Bachelor of Science degree in "Open Source Computing" within its Computer Science Department. The Aberystwyth's Department of Computer Science is ranked first in Wales and came number 17 in the United Kingdom.
