A small victory for Apple in the patent war against HTC, the US International Trade Commission (ITC) ruled out that HTC is infringing one of Apple's patents in a number of its smartphones.

The oVirt project announced that Canonical, Cisco, IBM, Intel, NetApp, Red Hat and SUSE have joined together to help create a new open source community for the development of open virtualization platforms, including virtual management tools to manage the Kernel-based Virtual Machine (KVM) hypervisor. With the oVirt project, the industry gains an open source, openly governed virtualization stack.

PHP-based systems WordPress, Joomla! and Drupal continue to dominate the web content management space. But, while the Big 3 remain unchanged from last year, the newly issued fourth annual Open Source CMS Market Share report concludes that WordPress has re-taken the overall lead from Joomla!

If you think Ubuntu versions' names look funny, you have to get a look at the names given for Linux kernels, these names found in the Makefile of the source trees (and that can be found in the Git repository of Linux) don't only use animal names, but either funnier and more sarcastic adjectives and nouns.

Ubuntu turns 7. Happy birthday!

Exactly seven years ago Warty Warthog, the first Ubuntu edition ever was released. Even if it was released as version 4.10 (since it was released in October 2004) the Canonical-powered Linux distribution hit the Internet and became an istant success.

In these seven years Ubuntu has changed the Linux desktop experience by making it more user-friendly for ordinary people.

Joshua McKenty, the current leader of OpenStack cloud operating system and former development lead at Netscape, said that Open Source needs to rethink its priorities and criticized Mozilla's lack of attention to customers, as reported by ReadWriteWeb.

Some of the big pharmaceutical companies are taking an open source and open access approach to save both time and money in early-stage research, similarly to what open source already did for software.

By having the cost of drug research increasing yearly, and with only little new drugs approved, some of the biggest pharmaceutical manufacturers begin to have doubts about the current methodologies and concepts in drug research, especially the need to keep patents and intellectual property secret.

Red Hat is expected to be the first 1 Billion open source company by the end of 2012.

The Raleigh, North Carolina-based company has announced its financial results for the fiscal year 2012 second quarter, with a total revenue for the quarter of $281.3 million and an increase of 28% from the year ago quarter.
